LITTLE CURTIS AND THE BLUES

SUPER RARE TOP INSTRUMENTAL FUNK

How many funk 45s have you heard out of cold and rainy Vancouver WA? That’s right - none! But here’s one of the very few – and as you’d expect from the best funk reissue label in the world - it’s a SCORCHER!

Back in ’68, there was fierce competition to be the #1 soul band in town. Little Curtis & the Blues were that band, and every Friday night they paid their dues down at The Trapedero Club. The ballads sung by frontman Little Curtis made the girls cry, then Dennis Springer’s hot sax came in to make them jive. The 7-piece band was tight and together and they saw the light – studio time was booked and they laid down some music – wicked funky soul music with a jazz-fuelled fire and passion!

So out of the cold, rain-soaked hills of Washington state came some unexpected HEAT with Little Curtis & the Blues forging this burning gem of a deep funk instrumental. But getting things RIGHT and getting things TIGHT is never easy; organist Mike Klinger remembers that it took a good few hours just to perfect the tricky breakdown that appears halfway through – when you hear it you’ll see why it was worth the effort! In the end several takes of ‘Soul Desire’ were laid down on tape to get the finished article – we’ve presented two of them here, one per side – which is your favourite? Make your own mind up. Whatever you decide, if you’re into solid funky jazz with horns & Hammond – this is where the cold turns to hot!
